Low BMI

Low BMI

If your BMI is low (under 18.5), you are considered underweight. Keep in mind that BMI measures your weight as it relates to your height, and has nothing to do with how your body looks.

BMI that is too low is often related to anorexia and/or malnutrition, and can lead to health issues such as heart disease. A body mass index that is too low, on its own is a risk factor for heart problems, such as impaired ventricular function, and greater risk of mortality in the event of cardiac surgery.

In the case of a low BMI, the focus should be on healthy weight gain. This will provide the body with the vitamins and nutrients it needs to stay healthy, in turn taking any strain off the heart and body. Talk to your doctor about what foods you should eat to gain weight in a healthy way. You donÆt want to eat too much food with ôempty caloriesö, such as potato chips and sweets. As a rule, you should eat a lot of multi-grains, fruits and vegetables. Refer to a food pyramid as a guide. You should also begin an exercise program as well, to help build muscle tone. If you are underweight, your muscles may be underdeveloped, which will make you weak. Walking, swimming, and aerobic exercise are all good ways to strengthen your muscles. While a low BMI can signify problems, itÆs never too late to change your lifestyle and gain weight.
